PenFed Credit Union Debuts Military-Focused Rewards Credit Card
PenFed Credit Union has launched the Defender Rewards Visa Signature card, targeting military members with exclusive benefits and elevated earn rates.
PenFed Credit Union, one of the largest federal credit unions in the United States, announced Thursday the rollout of the PenFed Defender Rewards™ Visa Signature® card, a new product designed with military members and their families in mind. The Tysons, Virginia-based institution said the card features exclusive benefits tailored to the needs of service members alongside bonus earning potential in high-spend categories.
The launch reflects a broader competitive push among financial institutions to capture the military and veteran market, a segment known for its distinct financial needs and long-term institutional loyalty. Credit unions with federal charters, like PenFed, have historically served this demographic and often leverage their nonprofit structure to offer more competitive terms than traditional banks.

No specific annual fee, introductory APR, or sign-up bonus figures were disclosed in the announcement, but the credit union emphasized that the Defender Rewards card is designed to reward spending patterns common among active-duty personnel, veterans, and military families. The Visa Signature designation typically confers a standard suite of travel protections, purchase benefits, and concierge access at the network level.
Founded to serve military members, PenFed has grown into a nationally available credit union with millions of members across the country. The introduction of a dedicated rewards product underscores the institution's continued focus on differentiating its card portfolio for its core constituency at a time when the premium rewards card market remains intensely competitive.
