Switzerland Approves First Spot Bitcoin ETF Under Swiss Law
BIT Asset Management receives FINMA approval for Switzerland's first and Europe's only spot Bitcoin ETF, open to retail investors.
Swiss financial regulators have approved the country's first exchange-traded fund under Swiss law that invests directly in bitcoin, marking a significant milestone for both the Swiss and broader European cryptocurrency markets. The approval was granted to BIT Asset Management AG, a wholly owned Swiss subsidiary, by the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority, known as FINMA.
The fund is notable not only as Switzerland's first spot Bitcoin ETF but also as the only such product of its kind currently available in Europe, according to the announcement. Unlike futures-based products, a spot ETF holds the underlying asset directly, giving investors more straightforward exposure to bitcoin's price movements without derivative instruments.

The product has been approved for retail investors in Switzerland, broadening access to direct bitcoin investment beyond institutional players. This regulatory clearance reflects Switzerland's continued positioning as a crypto-friendly financial hub, having previously attracted numerous blockchain and digital asset firms to its so-called Crypto Valley in the Zug canton.
The approval arrives as institutional and retail interest in regulated crypto investment vehicles continues to grow globally, following the landmark approval of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the United States earlier in the decade. Europe has lagged behind in offering equivalent regulated products, making Switzerland's move a notable development for the region's digital asset landscape.
